[englisch/amerikanisch, 'eθnɪk 'fjuːʃn], Spielart der New-Age-Musik, die durch Einflüsse »ethnischer«, d. h. »nicht-westlicher« Musikformen, Instrumente, Spielweisen, Rhythmen oder Melodien gekennzeichnet ist. So groß die Unschärfe des Begriffs, so vielfältig sind die Möglichkeiten des damit Gemeinten. Durchgesetzt hat sich diese Bezeichnung hauptsächlich für New-Age-Spielweisen, die durch den Reichtum der asiatischen und afrikanischen Musikkulturen inspiriert sind. Aufgekommen ist der Begriff allerdings für die Solo-Alben von Ex-Talking-Heads-Sänger und -Gitarrist David Byrne (* 1952), wie z. B. »Rei Momo« (1989), »Forest« (1991)» oder »Uh-Oh« (1992), in denen er mit traditioneller Musik aus Südamerika experimentiert. Als typischer Vertreter gelten die Synthesizerkoryphäe David Parsons (* 1949), der amerikanische Dulcimer-Virtouse (Dulcimer) Malcolm Dalglish (* 1943) sowie die deutschen Gruppen Popol Vuh und Tri Atma.
